Best Brunch Chains in Eastern Europe: 5 Spots, 3 Capitals (2026)

Cookie Beacon is the only brunch chain we found with brunch spots in three capitals: two in Budapest, two in Bucharest and one in Belgrade, all walk-in only. It is family-run, it started in Budapest in 2021, and every room serves the same backbone of hearty brunch plates, coffee light-roasted in Barcelona and chunky cookies baked in-house every day. The Budapest pair are the flagship: our two Budapest brunch spots sit by St. Stephen’s Basilica and on Ferenciek tere. The other multi-site names in the region are Cafe Brunch Budapest in Hungary, Charlotte in Poland, Bistro Monk in Prague, PAUL in Romania and Smokvica in Belgrade. Each is covered below from its own website, checked in September 2026.

This is our own chain, so read it as a guide written by one of the entries. We have kept the rival section to what the other chains say about themselves: who they are, which cities they’re in, and a link to their own site. We don’t print their star ratings or prices, because a third-party snapshot goes stale in a week and we would rather you check their listing on the day.

Cookie Beacon: 5 brunch spots, 3 capitals

All five are walk-in only.

The hours are the one thing that changes as you cross a border. Budapest opens an hour earlier on weekdays and closes an hour earlier every day. From a Ferenciek tere review:

That 5 PM close is Budapest only. Bucharest and Belgrade run to 18:00.

What the five rooms share, and where they differ

The shared core is easy to list because it comes straight off the three country menus:

• The brunch plates: Eggs Benedict on Cheddar-Scones, the Chicken & Waffles Stack, Crème Brûlée French Toast, Carrot-Cake Pancakes, a shakshuka, the Philly Cheese Steak Protein-Bowl and the Avo Smashed Cheeseburger.
• The coffee: a specialty list light-roasted in Barcelona, from espresso to V60.
• The Mimosa Bar: four flavours on every menu. In Budapest they are Strawberry Sangria, Sour Candy, Apple-Pie and Classic, served every day at Ft 2,100 each.
• The chunky cookies: handmade in-house daily. Classic Choco Chip, Nutella & Maldon Salt, Pistachio Cream & Crumbs, Red Velvet & Oreo, Lotus & Dulce de Leche and Cinnamon-Roll are on all three menus.

Each country then adds its own. Budapest has the Cape Cod Shrimp Roll and Madrid Smashed Eggs. Bucharest and Belgrade share a Croque Madame Pancake Stack that Budapest doesn’t serve; Bucharest adds a Mango Banana Oatmilk Smoothie, a Pistachio Raspberry Latte and Petro Vaselo organic wines. Belgrade has the Ube Power Granola Bowl, the Cookie Berry Glow Bowl, wines from Zmajevac and DOGMA craft beer.

Budapest’s two brunch spots print the same card with one exception: Ferenciek tere is cheaper on five coffees, espresso among them. The full Budapest list is on the Basilica menu and the Ferenciek tere menu.

What makes the chain distinct

The cookies come first. They are thick, domed and heavy in the hand, closer to a small cake than a flat biscuit, and they are the reason some guests cross a border:

The brunch is hearty, not dainty. The plates are built to be lunch as well as breakfast: chicken on a waffle, eggs on a cheddar scone, a steak protein bowl. From a Basilica review:

Walk-in everywhere. No bookings in any city: just walk in during opening hours.

Plant-based cooking with the seed oils cut back. In Budapest the owner has confirmed the Carrot-Cake Pancakes (Ft 4,400), the Caramel Fudge cookie (Ft 1,990) and the Maple Chai Latte (Ft 1,950) as vegan. The full rundown is in our guide to vegan brunch in Budapest.

A sister cheesecake brand. Cheesecake by Cookie Beacon runs two separate shops with their own Google profiles: Arany János utca 27 in Budapest, a short walk from the Basilica brunch spot, and Strada Benjamin Franklin 9 in Bucharest. More cities coming. A sixth brunch spot has been announced for Amman, Jordan, the first outside Europe. It has no opening date yet.

These are the multi-site breakfast and brunch names we could verify from the chains’ own websites. The list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

Checked September 2026 on each chain’s own site. Branch lists change, so check the site before you go.

What each one says about itself:

• Cafe Brunch Budapest started in Budapest in 2017, by its own account. Its restaurant page lists ten venues, eight in Budapest plus one each in Szentendre and Győr, and the homepage calls them “all-day breakfast and brunch places”. • Charlotte chleb i wino is a bistro built around its own bread (its tagline is “chleb i wino”, bread and wine), with venues in Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław and Poznań. Its Plac Szczepański page in Kraków says “Breakfast is served until closing.”
• Bistro Monk runs two rooms in Prague’s centre, on Michalská and Maltézské náměstí, and both advertise all-day breakfast from 08:30.
• PAUL Romania is the Romanian arm of the French bakery chain, not a brunch house. Its site lists bakeries in Bucharest and Constanța and a Petit Déjeuner range.
• Smokvica has five restaurants in Belgrade: Jovanova, Molerova, Kralja Petra, Airport City and Ada Ciganlija. Its site lists them as restaurants rather than brunch spots; the Kralja Petra page gives a 09:00 opening.

Of the six, Cookie Beacon is the only one running brunch spots in three countries.

Which chain for which trip
