Budapest’s two big Christmas markets, Advent Bazilika on Szent István tér and Vörösmarty Classic Xmas on Vörösmarty tér, both open on 13 November 2026, and both open their stalls at 11:00. Cookie Beacon Brunch’s two Budapest spots open at 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends, so you can sit down to a hot breakfast first and walk to either market as the stalls open. Our Basilica spot at Hercegprímás u. 15 is 186 m in a straight line from St. Stephen’s Basilica. Our Ferenciek tere spot is 509 m from Vörösmarty tér.

Both sets of hours come from the organisers’ own sites, as do the entry, payment and programme rows (Advent Bazilika rules, exhibitors and programme; Vörösmarty programme). Advent Bazilika’s organiser lists wins in the European Best Destinations vote for Europe’s best Christmas market in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023, in its own news. At Vörösmarty tér the craft stalls and the mini-train are there for the last time on 28 December; from 29 December the square gets ready for its New Year’s Eve party. Check both sites on the day you go.

Breakfast near the Basilica Christmas market

Cookie Beacon Brunch Basilica is our original spot, at Hercegprímás u. 15, 186 m in a straight line from the front of St. Stephen’s Basilica. On a Saturday you can sit down at 09:00, eat, and still reach Szent István tér well before the first stall opens at 11:00.

What to order on a cold morning, at Basilica prices:

  • Eggs Benedict on Cheddar-Scones, 4,600 Ft. Poached eggs and hollandaise on freshly baked cheddar scones, with feta, smashed avocado and honey-toasted granola.
  • Madrid Smashed Eggs, 4,500 Ft. Crispy potatoes under runny-yolk eggs, with chili flakes. You can add Serrano ham.
  • Pistachio & Berries French Toast, 4,950 Ft. Brioche baked in-house, red berry jam and red velvet pistachio cream. Order it if you start the day with dessert.
  • Carrot-Cake Pancakes, 4,600 Ft. The card describes them as vegan fluffy pancakes, with mascarpone coconut cream, berry jam, cinnamon and almonds.

On a cold morning, order a hot chocolate: the Patagonian Submarine Hot Chocolate and the S’mores Hot Chocolate cost 1,650 Ft each. Our cheesecake shop’s menu describes the first as a chocolate stick you melt into warm milk and the second as hot chocolate with toasted meringue. The Pumpkin Spice Cloud Latte and the Maple Chai Latte with oat milk are 1,950 Ft each. Espresso is 900 Ft here and a double-shot flat white 1,600 Ft. Mimosas are 2,100 Ft, and we pour them every day of the week. The full Basilica menu has every price.

Before you leave, take a chunky cookie for the walk. Most are 1,990 Ft, the Cinnamon-Roll Cookie and the Red Velvet & Oreo among them, and the Macadamia & Strawberries is 2,300 Ft.

Breakfast near Vörösmarty tér

Cookie Beacon Brunch Ferenciek Tere is at Ferenciek tere 1, where the shopping stretch of Váci utca starts. Vörösmarty tér is at its northern end, 509 m in a straight line, so after breakfast you walk the length of the shopping street to the market.

The food menu is the same as at Basilica, at the same prices. Six coffees cost less here: espresso is 790 Ft, cortado 1,190 Ft, cappuccino 1,290 Ft, latte 1,390 Ft, batch brew 1,300 Ft and the double-shot flat white 1,490 Ft. The hot chocolates and signature lattes cost the same as at Basilica. See the Ferenciek tere menu.

A day plan: breakfast, both markets, hot chocolate after dark

This plan starts at Basilica. On a weekday, move every time before 11:00 one hour earlier.

TimeWhereWhat
09:00Cookie Beacon Brunch Basilica, Hercegprímás u. 15Breakfast. Weekdays from 08:00
10:30St. Stephen’s BasilicaStep inside before the stalls open: the church opens to visitors at 09:00 from Monday to Saturday and at 13:00 on Sundays (official site, checked 21 October 2026)

13:00Vörösmarty tér, 558 m southVörösmarty Classic Xmas, with craft stalls at the top of Váci utca until 28 December
16:30Cookie Beacon Brunch Basilica, Hercegprímás u. 15A hot chocolate or a cookie for the evening before we close at 17:00
17:30Advent BazilikaThe light projection on the Basilica’s façade starts, every afternoon, per the organiser’s programme
Until 20:00Cheesecake by Cookie Beacon, Arany János utca 27Hot chocolate and a Basque cheesecake, about 190 m from the Basilica

On a Sunday the church opens only at 13:00, so do the market first and the church after lunch. Our Lipótváros walk from the Basilica has the terrace and treasury details if you want to climb the dome while you’re there.

From Ferenciek tere, run the plan in reverse: breakfast at Ferenciek tere 1, walk up Váci utca to Vörösmarty tér for 11:00, then 558 m north to the Basilica for the afternoon and the lights.

The cheesecake shop is a separate counter from our brunch spots. It sells Basque cheesecakes and drinks, including both hot chocolates, and its posted hours are 09:00–20:00 every day, or until the cheesecakes sell out.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve

Both Budapest brunch spots usually open 08:00–17:00 from Monday to Friday and 09:00–17:00 at weekends. Hours on holidays can differ, so check the Google Maps listing for Cookie Beacon Brunch Basilica or Cookie Beacon Brunch Ferenciek Tere before you set out on 24–26 December, 31 December or 1 January. Do the same for the cheesecake shop.

The markets shorten their own hours on those days. On 24 December the Basilica market closes at 15:00 and Vörösmarty tér at 14:00. Vörösmarty tér’s craft stalls leave after 28 December and the square turns into a New Year’s Eve party, open until 03:00 on 31 December. Advent Bazilika also stays open until 03:00 that night, and it is the only one of the two that opens on 1 January.

The distances

All distances are straight lines between OpenStreetMap coordinates. The streets add a little, so open Google Maps for the walking time. The M1 metro stops at Vörösmarty tér, and Deák Ferenc tér (M1, M2, M3) is about 300–350 m from each market.
