Our Yogurt & Honey Whipped Granola Bowl is Greek yogurt whipped with honey, topped with honey toasted granola, blueberries and strawberries, dehydrated orange, pollen and mint, for 3,950 Ft at both Cookie Beacon brunch spots in Budapest.

It is the lowest-priced plate in the Hearty Brunch section of our card for brunch in Budapest, level with the Breakfast Crunch Pretzelbun-Sandwich, and one of the four Hearty Brunch plates that card tags gluten-free. Both spots serve it all day, and neither takes bookings.

Why is the yogurt whipped?

Here is the reason, from the people who put it on the card:

Whipping adds fluffiness and air to the thick, creamy Greek yogurt. Local honey and toasted granola add sweetness, crunch and texture. Fresh berries balance out the richness and remind of eternal summer.

The story has three parts, and each is a layer of the bowl.

The yogurt. Greek yogurt is thick because it is strained. Whipping it beats air into that thickness, so it turns light and fluffy instead of dense. In our photos it is the smooth white base, spread to the rim of the bowl.

The honey and the granola. The story says local honey. The card lists it in the yogurt, and again in the honey toasted granola, the clusters heaped in the middle with nut pieces and seeds in them. That is where the crunch comes from.

The berries. Blueberries and halved strawberries, sitting on top. In the story they balance the richness of the yogurt and honey.

What is in the Granola Bowl?

Our Budapest menu lists six things, here with the Hungarian names:

  • Greek yogurt with honey (mézes görög joghurt). Whipped, as the name says.
  • Honey toasted granola (mézes pirított granola). In our photos it is heaped in the middle, with nut pieces and seeds visible in the clusters.
  • Blueberries and strawberries (áfonya és eper).
  • Dehydrated orange (szárított narancs). Thin dried slices, standing at the rim.
  • Pollen (nyers virágpor, raw flower pollen). Small yellow and orange granules scattered over the yogurt.
  • Mint (menta). One sprig in the middle.

Our Budapest card prints no add-ons for this bowl.

What is bee pollen, and why is it on a granola bowl?

Bee pollen is flower pollen that bees collect and pack into small granules. It is sold as a food, and it turns up on yogurt and granola bowls for its colour and its slightly sweet, floral taste. On ours it is the scatter of granules over the yogurt; the Hungarian card calls it raw.

It comes from flowers, so if you have a pollen allergy, tell our team before you order.

Sugar-free, with honey?

Our Budapest card prints two tags on this bowl at both brunch spots: gluten-free and sugar-free. The same card lists honey in the yogurt and in the granola. Honey is a natural sugar, so read the tag as no added refined sugar, and ask our team before ordering if you avoid sugar for medical reasons.

The gluten-free tag makes this one of four Hearty Brunch plates on our Budapest card that carry it; four of our cookies carry it too. Everything is made in a shared kitchen.

How do you eat it?

Start with a spoon straight down through the granola into the yogurt, so every spoonful has crunch and cream together. The clip on this page shows that first scoop.

Where does the granola bowl come from?

Granola is American. The name comes out of the health-food movement of the late 1800s: a “Granula” in the 1860s, then “granola” by the early 1880s, though the toasted oat clusters most people picture today date from the 1960s. Yogurt with honey is far older, and Greek yogurt with honey and nuts is a standard breakfast in Greece. The granola bowl, yogurt topped with granola and fruit, put the two together on café menus in the last few decades, and every café makes its own version.

Where does it sit among our dishes?

Two plates on our Budapest menu are its closest relatives:

  • Spirulina Power Granola Bowl, 4,400 Ft. Our other granola bowl. Its base is pineapple, banana and coconut milk with spirulina powder, not yogurt, and it adds peanut butter, collagen and goji. Both bowls share the honey toasted granola, the pollen and the mint.
  • Breakfast Crunch Pretzelbun-Sandwich, 3,950 Ft. The same price, at the other end of the card: eggs, cheddar and crispy bacon in a homemade pretzelbun.

If a review says granola bowl without saying which, it could mean either bowl. This page only quotes guests who said yogurt or honey.

What should you know before ordering it in Budapest?

It sits in Hearty Brunch, the first section of our Budapest menu, at the very end. The name stays in English on both halves of the card.

The price is the same at Basilica on Hercegprímás utca, near St. Stephen’s Basilica, and at Ferenciek tere, at the Váci utca end of the square. Both open 08:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 17:00 at weekends, and both are walk-in only. The walk between them takes about fifteen minutes.
